Current Status

This aircraft is just coming off charter certificate in Costa Rica. All inspections and documentation are complete and up to date.

The plane arrived back in the US last this week and is in conformity inspection to receive Standard Airworthiness Certificate and clear title with tail number N174LS. 

Exterior 7, interior 9.5.

Airframe is corrosion free. Current WB (Jan 2017) empty weight of 2,440 with a certified gross weight of 3,525.

More history about the plane

Straight out of the factory the plane went to Canada and was put on floats. In the 90’s the plane was operated on certificate in the northeast. Then operated privately for a short time before I acquired it in September 2013.

As FAA- ATP, A&P-IA, past experience in Grumman Albatross and PBY indoctrinated me into the sort of prep and maintenance that is appropriate for routine operations in ocean environments.

Immediately after purchasing the plane in 2013 we spent 8 months meticulously preparing it for Central America operations. 

Ailerons, flaps, and empennage were removed, inspected, seam sealed with PRC, and repainted. All seams and lap joints on the airframe were also sealed. 

The interior was completely rebuilt with all new plexiglass (Great Lakes), all 6 seats reupholstered with new fabric and foam, new seat belts, new headliner, instrument panel and waterproof Loncoin flooring. (Meets FAR25.853a and 25.793). 

Being a surfer myself, we installed an FAA approved extended baggage compartment that accommodates up to four 7-foot surfboards.

Our Panama and Costa Rica hangars were equipped with 1000 gallon capacity pump and fire hose wash down system. The plane was exhaustively cleaned after every use and ACF- 50 was routinely applied


A few words from her current owner, renowned pilot,  Mike Castillo

My dream was the same as many other seaplane pilots: to go fly in the beautiful tropics of Panama and Costa Rica.  

Upon arrival in Central America I acquired my Panama Commercial Seaplane and Mechanics licenses and flew on their equivalent of a 135 for nearly 3 years. Then I went to Costa Rica and did the same for about a year and a half.

It has been one of the best adventures of my lifetime, but I am ready to move on to my next goal: flying jets and working as an FAA DAR in Central and South America.

This plane is ideally suited for someone that wants to go explore with the confidence that plane is properly prepared and equipped and can easily go right back on a certificate here for 135 taxi and tours.”

About the Owner   Mike Castillo has extensive experience in small and large seaplanes, both vintage and newer. He was the lead mechanic and pilot of a Grumman Albatross, for the surf company, Billabong. In 2010, he was the lead engineer and pilot of another vintage Albatross for the Sylvester Stallone film, The Expendables.  He restored and piloted a 1944 PBY 5A from South Africa to San Diego in 2012, which he flew during the annual Oshkosh event the following year.  He holds the following ratings: ATP, AMES, Mechanic, A&P-IA. He specializes in vintage, amphibious aircraft recovery, repair, and restoration.
